A sub-text of the Vedas – the fount of all Indian Wisdom – Ayurveda literally means ‘The Knowledge of Life’. It is the ancient Indian (and world-wide original) Wellness Treatise – as opposed to Medical in the modern sense; as it focuses and emphasises on balanced lifestyles rather than modern (largely allopathic) curative medicines.

Naturally, Diet takes up a large part of Ayurveda and it is indeed the key to a balanced, full and vital life-style. In fact, the system treats all foods as essentially “medicinal”; when consumed correctly – in season and time of day – and in the right proportion.

This “Perfect Diet” may change from person to person… According to Ayurveda: five elements – Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether (Space) – make up the Universe, and thus, each of us; of course, in different proportions. These elements are further differentiated into ‘Doshas’ – Bio-Elements; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These – again in unique combinations – maintain and sustain our physical selves. Their equilibrium quite simply, is what Ayurveda strives to achieve…

Lastly, there is Taste – Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Pungent and Astringent – which is also an integral quality of every substance…
